Financial Crisis and
Healthcare Debate Shape Recent Spam Trends
For the second quarter in a
row, there were spikes in email-borne viruses not caught by major anti-virus
engines, differentiating these last two quarters from rather consistently
low numbers seen during the previous 18 months. A similar spike was reported
last quarter, but this quarter's increase was due to the massive outbreak of
two particular viruses and their numerous variants. Read more in the Q3 2009
Internet Threat Trend Report.

Is Your Business
Saving Money with Integrated Faxing?
Faxing is still vital for
most businesses. Many companies fax mission-critical business information
such as contracts, legal documents, purchase orders, sales quotes, order
confirmations, and more on a daily basis. But faxing for most organizations
is still a costly resource with funds tied up in fax machine leases,
printing the document to be faxed, and the time spent actually faxing.
RelayFax
Network Fax Manager can be integrated with the MDaemon Mail Server to
easily send and receive important documents without the costs associated
with managing and maintaining fax machines. Using the "New"
drop-down menu in World Client
, MDaemon's integrated web mail application, select "Fax" to send
a document directly from your desktop. It's that easy!
If you are not currently
using RelayFax Network Fax Manager for your business,
download a free 30-day fully functional trial today to see how

Important Reminder — You Don't Need to Uninstall
MDaemon for Updates
It is quick and easy to
upgrade to a new version of MDaemon Email Server for Windows. A
"fresh" installation is not necessary. But, before you begin it's
a good idea to verify that your Upgrade
Protection is current.
To upgrade:
1. Backup the
entire MDaemon directory structure. (See "How to back up
MDaemon")
2. Download the
latest version of the MDaemon Mail Server from the Existing
Customer Download page.
3. Install, and
make sure to select the same location where your MDaemon Mail Server is
already installed.
4. After files
are copied and the conversions have run (if necessary), MDaemon will be
successfully
upgraded with your old settings intact.
Notes:
If you are running
WorldClient, WebAdmin, or SyncML on IIS, be sure to "unload" under
the IIS Home Directory settings before running the upgrade. This should
prevent MDaemon from forcing a reboot on upgrade.

Enable Faxing from WorldClient Web Mail
If you have RelayFax Network
Fax Manager it is easy to fax directly within WorldClient. However, the
following two configurations must be made first:
1. In
RelayFax, make sure the proper document type/print application associations
have been made
a. Select Tools | Attachment
Faxing
b. Check the Convert and
Fax Attached Documents Found within Email Messages box
c. If you do not see the extension
you want RelayFax to attach in the Document Types you can manually
add them to the
list
i. In
the Add New File Extension field, type the extension you
want to add
ii. Click
"Add", then "Apply"
and "Ok"
2. In
MDaemon, make sure faxing is enabled in WorldClient. To do this:
a. Go to setup | Web & SyncML
Services
b. Select "RelayFax"
under the WorldClient menu
c. Check the box "Allow
WorldClient users to compose and send faxes thru RelayFax"
d. Select one of the following two
options:
i. "Use
SMTP to deliver faxes to RelayFax"
1. In
the "RelayFax Server's Email Address" field, specify the email
address to which you want
messages
intended for faxing to be delivered. This value must match the address that
you have
configured
RelayFax to monitor for these messages
ii. "Directly
deliver faxes into RelayFax's incoming fax queue"
1. If
RelayFax resides on the same machine on which MDaemon is running, you may
leave this file
path
blank. Otherwise, you must specify the network path to RelayFax's \app\
folder

Reporting Outbreak Protection False Positives and False
Negatives
There has been some
confusion on the proper procedure for submitting false positives (messages
marked as spam by Outbreak Protection that were actually not spam), and
false negatives (messages that were not flagged a spam, but should have been
flagged). False positives can be sent to
spamfp@altn.com, and false negatives can be sent to spamfn@altn.com. Be sure to send the actual
message that was flagged incorrectly as an attachment. View the knowledge base
article for additional details.

Using IP Shielding to Prevent Email Spoofing and
Increased Spam
Some users have reported
receiving spam emails that appear to be coming from their local domain. In
this case, the MAIL FROM field has been spoofed. MDaemon's IP Shielding
feature allows you to specify the IP addresses that are allowed to send mail
on behalf of your domain. If MDaemon receives a message claiming to come
from a local domain, yet also coming from a non-authorized IP address, IP
Shielding will reject the message. Please view the knowledge base
article for instructions for configuring IP Shielding for MDaemon.
You may also consider
requiring SMTP Authentication. To do so:
1. Go to Security
| Security Settings
2. Select
"SMTP Authentication"
3. Check the box
"Authentication is always required when mail is from local
accounts"
4. When IP
Shielding is enabled, you can exempt authenticated SMTP sessions from the IP
Shielding
restrictions by checking the box, "Don't
apply IP Shield to authenticated sessions"
