Hi,
I have Mdaemon 19.5.1 with ActiveSync, and Autodiscovery set up.
On Windows 10, Outlook 2019 version 1808 I was able to correctly setup an account by simply entering email address and password, and the account was immediately configured as an Exchange account.
I recently unistalled that version of Outlook to upgrade to Outlook 2019 version 1910 (build number starting with 12130).
Now, It is IMPOSSIBLE to add an Exchange account. I am stuck in the initial configuration wizard. Neither exchange nor Exchange 2013 account types work, nor I am allowed to manually input server details.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks!!
Lore

Hello,

There are a couple of things to check.  First, some versions of Outlook no longer allow you to easily manually configure an account.  It expects that you have autodiscover configured.  If you don’t have autodiscover configured then you have to change configurations in order to get Outlook to allow you to manually configure an account.  Here is some information from Microsoft about how to use the advanced configurations to configure your account.

https://support.office.com/en-us/article/add-an-email-account-using-advanced-setup-560a9065-3c3a-4ec5-a24f-cdb9a8d622a2

Here are instructions on how to turn off the simplified version of the account creation wizard.

https://www.slipstick.com/outlook/disable-outlooks-account-wizard/

The second thing I would check is to verify your SSL certificate.  Outlook requires SSL in order to connect and if you are using a self signed certificate then you must configure it as a trusted certificate on your client machine.

Hi,
thanks for your answer.
Thanks for info about how to configure Outlook 2019 manually and disable the new wizard.
I really would like however to solve the autodiscover issue. MDaemon runs on a VM and there is a IIS reverse proxy directing traffic to it, after performing SSL offloading. The certificates used by IIS are generated with Let's Encrypt and trusted.
So why is autodiscover failing?
I report one sample Autodiscover log:

Are you running webmail in IIS?† If you are, you need to setup MDDP.dll in IIS in order for autodiscover to work properly.† Below is an article with steps for configuring all of AutoDiscover to work properly in IIS, it includes steps for setting up MDDP.dll.

https://www.altn.com/Support/KnowledgeBase/KnowledgeBaseResults/?Number=910

By default, Autodiscover and accessing the MDaemon Discovery Protocol Server require HTTPS be used.† It looks like in the log snippet provided SSL is not being used.† Is there a similar session from the same client that has SSL enabled?†

Does the MDDP log show any errors when Outlook makes an autodiscover request?

If you open a browser and go to https://mail.domain.com/AutoDiscover/AutoDiscover.xml, where mail.domain.com is the actual host name of your server, what do you get?

If you open a browser and go to https://mail.domain.com/mddp/, where mail.domain.com is the actual host name of your server, what do you get?† You should be prompted for credentials.† If you enter a valid email address and password for an account in MDaemon, what do you get?

Hi,
thanks for your answer, Arron.
No, Mdaemon is running its own web server, on a dedicated VM. Requests from the internet reach IIS VM, and then are reverse proxied to MDaemon VM, when certain path is matched. Currently the paths for which requests are redirected are Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync|autodiscover|mddp|Mddp. Then yes, when I browse to https://mail.domain.com/AutoDiscover/AutoDiscover.xml I get MDaemon Autodiscover welcome page and when I browse to https://mail.domain.com/mddp/ I get 403 Access denied, the very same response I get if i try to reach that address from MDaemon VM, since VM DNS resolves the host as the VM itself. So I cannot spot any trouble.
OK, I have just found MDDP logs, and the problem is the following:
191212 121853246 I [7875A1D0] 0x4144002E Connection: 192.168.1.21 Method:OPTIONS SSL:0 User-Agent:MDDPClient
191212 121853246 W [7875A1D0] 0x81440090 This server does not accept unencrypted requests
191212 121853246 W [7875A1D0] 0x81440060 HTTP Status: 403
191212 121853246 I [7875A1D0] 0x4144002F Connection Terminating
So I must configure MDDP to accept unencrypted requests (this is no security issue since traffic is between VMs using internal IPs)
Can you explain me how to do it?
Thanks!!

In general, we do not recommend accepting unencrypted requests, but it may be necessary in some environments.

To make the change go to the MDaemon\Data directory and set the following in the MDDP.ini file:

[Server]

AllowUnsecuredCommunications=Yes

Save the file and then restart MDaemon.

Hi,
Thanks, now MDDP is working! Even from outside. Credentials are securely sent via HTTPS to IIS VM, which then routes them to Mdaemon over HTTP, but that connection is via an Internal Switch.
Unfortunately Autodiscover is still not working.

Should I add proper dns records Autodiscover is searching for?
Autodiscover for POP/SMTP/IMAP would be nice, but I only need to make ActiveSync/Exchange working.
I want to thank you for all the precious help you are providing.

Adding the SRV records is not required, unless there is a specific host name you want returned for a protocol by the AutoDiscover system.  By default AutoDiscover will return the host name that was used to connect to it.  Basically by default it will return autodiscover.domain.com.

Based on the log snippet provided, it looks to me like the autodiscover system is working and that you already have an SRV DNS record setup for ActiveSync, what host name is it pointing to?  Is the host name valid?

You can enable debug logging for the AutoDiscover system by going to the MDaemon\Data directory and setting the following in the AutoDiscover.ini file:

[System]

LogXML=Yes

Setting LogXML=Yes will cause the request and response data to be logged so that we can see exactly what is being sent back to the client.  Once you have set it, save the file and restart MDaemon.  Then go through the account setup process in Outlook again.  All AutoDiscover requests from Outlook and responses should be logged in the MDaemon\Logs\AutoDiscover directory.

Once we are done debugging this you will want to set LogXML=No, otherwise you will end up with tons of xml files being generated.

Should I add proper dns records Autodiscover is searching for?
Autodiscover for POP/SMTP/IMAP would be nice, but I only need to make ActiveSync/Exchange working.
I want to thank you for all the precious help you are providing.

Hi,
I attach the logs. I think this is an issue to be upscaled to development team. MDaemon answers correctly to Outlook but account configuration still fails. One thing to note, when Outlook queries Autodiscover service with an authenticated request, MDaemon answers with all server addresses but does not report anything about ActiveSync/Exchange; which is rather strange and maybe the root of the problem.
I have also tried with manual account configuration on Outlook, and it still fails.

Lets start with trying to solve the issue with ActiveSync not working when you setup the account manually.  If a manual account setup doesn’t work then autodiscover is unlikely to complete successfully.

What does the activesync log show when you try to setup the account in Outlook manually?

Are you able to manually setup mobile devices to use ActiveSync?  Are they working correctly?

Do you have SSL enabled in MDaemon for webmail?

Is the certificate you are using valid and trusted?

Outlook requires SSL be used with ActiveSync and if the certificate is not trusted Outlook will give you a warning.

If you open a browser and go to https://autodiscover.[domain]/microsoft-server-activesync, what do you get?

Hi,
Sorry for the late answer.
Ok, I have fixed some problems and now with manual configuration everything works if I configure Outlook 2019 with manual config, specifying manually the exchange server.
Autoconfiguration still does not work though.
If I open a browser and go to https://autodiscover.[domain]/microsoft-server-activesync, I correctly get MDAirSync homepage.
Thanks
Lore

Was this ever resolved?
I have the same issue where I have SRV records set up correctly for AutoDiscover ActiveSync and I can manually set up Exchange ActiveSync in the latest Outlook on Windows but if I have Outlook use AutoDiscover it sets up IMAP instead of ActiveSync and this is in the log (IP and domain have been masked)...
(Also trying to use AutoDiscover with latest Outlook on Mac gives same log as below but will not auto setup anything and eventually returns an error in Outlook)

From what I have read about Outlook’s AutoDiscover implementation it prioritizes IMAP and POP over ActiveSync.  So if there is data in the AutoDiscover response about the IMAP and POP server, Outlook will always setup the IMAP or POP account.

Theoretically, we should be able to exclude POP and IMAP from the Autodiscover response and cause Outlook to setup an ActiveSync account, assuming Outlook requests the ActiveSync data from the AutoDiscover server.  Unfortunately, at this time we have no way of excluding this data from the AutoDiscover response.  We will look into making these changes for a future version.

There may be a way to tell Outlook to skip the AutoDiscover lookup for the standard POP, IMAP, and SMTP protocols so that it can continue one with the AutoDiscover process for ActiveSync, but if there is a way, I haven’t figured it out yet.

Hi!
No this problem was not resolved. I am still waiting for a solution.
Even adding _airsync._tcp SRV records to domain does not help.
I am still unable to configure MDaemon accounts under Outlook 2019
