A simple configuration in MDaemon can prevent a potentially alarming virus from bypassing SMTP scanning engines and antivirus products!

A well-known feature in Outlook Express, which allows you to reassemble fragmented messages (RFC 2046, Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension - MIME), can allow attackers to embed malicious code in a message that may avoid detection by some SMTP scanners in its fragmented form. When the attachments are broken up in this way, it becomes very difficult for any AntiVirus software to detect a virus within the fragments.

MDaemon has the ability to overcome and remove these potentially malicious attachments by utilizing the Content Filter feature.

Step-by-step guide for MDaemon version 6.x:

Setup | Content Filter

1) Create a new rule
2) Name the rule "strip message/partial"
3) For 'Select conditions for this rule', use "if the message has an attachment with a CONTENT-TYPE of..."
4) Click the 'specific content-type' and type in: message/partial
5) For 'Select actions for this rule', select "Copy Message to Folder".
6) For 'specify information', enter "c:\mdaemon\badmsgs\partial" or the other destination you would like to use for such mail
7) For 'Select actions for this rule' select "Strip all attachments".

Click ‘OK’ twice.

Step-by-step guide for MDaemon versions 3.x, 4.x, and 5.x:

Setup | Content Filter

1) Create a new rule
2) Name the rule "strip message/partial"
3) For 'Select conditions for this rule', use "if the user defined HEADER 1 contains".
4) Click the 'userdef1:' and type in:
Content-TYPE
5) Click OK
6) Click 'contains specific strings' and type in: message/partial
7) Click Add
Click OK
9) For 'Select actions for this rule', select "Copy Message to Folder".
10) For 'specify information', enter "c:\mdaemon\badmsgs\partial" or the other destination you would like to use for such mail
11) For 'Select actions for this rule' select "Strip all attachments from message".

Click OK twice.

Please note that all messages with partial attachments will be affected by this rule, even those which do not contain a virus.
